It’s not uncommon for informal networks to form among people with similar backgrounds, often excluding employees from underrepresented identities who see fewer people like themselves in leadership roles. Sponsorship and mentoring opportunities can help fill this gap. These opportunities show underrepresented employees that the organization believes in their potential and is invested in their success. More importantly, they provide the access to the coaching and leadership development experience that is necessary for advancement.
