September 15 – October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.

It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

We asked our member organizations what they will be doing to acknowledge and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month this year. Here is what they shared:

Reaching for the Stars is the inspiring story of how he realized that dream, becoming the first Mexican-American astronaut. Hernàndez’s message of hard work, education, perseverance, of “reaching for the stars,” makes this a classic American autobiography.

We encourage all employees to join us in fostering an understanding and deeper appreciation for the enduring contributions of Latinos to our country.

The group’s members will participate in the First Hispanic Festival, taking place in Ferndale, MI. The festival is organized by Centro Cultural Hispano.

Through this organization, the group launched a contest for kids ages 5-13 to make a 1-minute video and explain what it means for them to be Hispanic and to be living in Michigan.

In October, the group will be hosting the After Hours Hispanic Leadership Connect to bring the leaders and members of the various Hispanic organizations in Michigan together.

Fifth Third will be taking the lead on this event to help initiate the conversation between the groups and to create a plan to support each other’s activities, to foster cooperation and better identify the needs of the community.

And in November, the group will sponsor the Run for the Dead 5K. The event is organized by the Southwest Detroit Business Association and takes competitors through two historic cemeteries. It celebrates the Mexican holiday of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) that honors deceased relatives and loved ones.

In commemoration of the annual Día de los Muertos holiday, an ofrenda (altar) will be created by a local artist and on display, and a special memorial tribute and blessing will be held before the race begins.

FINRA

This year, FINRA rolled out a new campaign titled “I AM FINRA,” which defined four new values for the organization: Collaboration, Expertise, Responsibility and Innovation.

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, the FINRA Latino Affinity Network (“FLAN”) plans to leverage the great energy surrounding this campaign and highlight one new value per week, throughout the month-long celebration.

Each week, the FLAN management committee team will answer two core questions for its members:

  • Where do we see this value in the organization?
  • How does this value measure up in the Hispanic community?

FLAN will feature the amazing work done by so many teams across the organization, including FINRA’s Investor Education department that places an emphasis on reaching the Spanish-speaking investing public, and FINRA’s Technology department who facilitates collaboration on a national level.

When it comes to reaching our communities, FLAN will use the national theme, “Hispanic Americans – A History of Serving Our Nation” to look for contributions that stem from merging two cultures. The management committee researched the history of things many Hispanics may perhaps take for granted, but are actually rooted in one of the core values.

For example, have you ever tried salsa dancing alone? If so, it probably was not as fun as dancing with a great partner. Salsa dancing is a wonderful example of collaboration across the Hispanic community.

Although, the origin of the dance traces back to several countries, including Cuba, many salseros actually credit New York City for creating the term “Salsa.”

Throughout the month, FLAN will also email its members short “selfie videos” made by various management committee members, where they discuss how they have successfully merged two cultures in the workplace.

The goal of the videos is to provide members with an opportunity to reflect on relatable obstacles and tips for overcoming similar challenges.

Lastly, as the closing event for Hispanic Heritage Month, FLAN will be hosting Yai Vargas, Founder & CEO of The Latinista. On October 15, employees are provided the opportunity to hear a presentation on personal branding.

The discussion topics will include:

  • Branding: Articulating Who You Are, Why You Do What You Do, Profile Optimization & The Value You Bring to Your Online & Offline Network
  • Thought Leadership: The Formula for Developing Your Storytelling Magic – Identifying 4 Core Pillars of How You Bring Value Based on Your Community’s Needs: When and What to Post
  • Building Community: Develop a Strategy That Allows You to Connect With Colleagues and Professionals for the Purpose of Bringing Value & Internal Mobility Opportunities.

General Mills

Here are some of the ways that our Hispanic Employee Network group is celebrating cultural differences, building empathy, and driving awareness around Hispanic Heritage Month:

“Caras” Project— an initiative where we share stories of different GMI Latinx/Hispanic Network employees.

Employees will be encouraged to start dialogue and share personal, cultural background as a way of celebrating ethnicity, building community and awareness. We’ll ask employees to post/print a one-pager at their desk, etc. and we’ll highlight a few of employees to the greater network/company with a printed headshot and a powerful caption showcased at the MGO.

The plan is to also make this content digitally available for field teams. (Think Humans of NY style!)

Field Engagement & Community Events—Our field teams are using Hispanic Heritage month to fuel the momentum of our most recent “Backpacks for the Border” event to continue serving those in need in their local communities.

For example, the Eastern Business Center will be hosting a speed packing event during the Eastern Region meeting in the coming weeks. Jo’s done an excellent job in leading and arming our field teams with the right information and guidance for execution.

Allyship— Both “Caras” and field events are a way of building allyship by asking employees outside of the network to engage in the learning about the experience of others and serving.

At Headquarters

  • Art Gallery Tour—with the help of our curators, our committee has gathered a curated list of all artwork from Latinx artists at the MGO (attached). We’ll look into scheduling an in-person guided tour for Minneapolis based employees.
  • Headquarter Celebration—In October, we’ll be having an exchange takeover (our Internal weekly Happy Hour) to celebrate with Latin American food, and potentially a dance performance.

GIANT is proudly supporting the community events such as Latin Music Fest in Lancaster on 9/7 and the LHACC Block Party in Harrisburg on 7/14.

Verizon

Verizon is proud to celebrate the Hispanic Heritage Month with the theme: All of Us: Nuestras Voces Unidas – Our Voices United!

This theme was voted and picked by our employee resource group members and will also be used by Huffington Post! It calls out it takes all of us within the Hispanic/Latinx community and beyond to work together and appreciate one another’s whole identities.

While the Hispanic/Latinx community is diverse and complex, when their voices are united, their power is unstoppable!

Here are a few examples of the activities we have planned for the month:

  • September 15:
Ronan Dunne, executive vice president and group CEO of Verizon Consumer Group, also the executive sponsor of our employee resource group – Hispanic Support Organization – kicks off the month across social media channels with a letter sent to all employees September 16 Monday.
  • September 18:
We will host our Verizon Hispanic Heritage Month webcast to celebrate the contributions and influence of the Hispanic community. The webcast will take place at the auditorium of our Basking Ridge NJ headquarters and will be streamed live for all employees globally and also on social media through our @VZUpToSpeed handles on Facebook and Twitter as well as on Huffpost.com and Huffpost Latina Voices.

The event’s keynote speaker, Claudia Romo Edelman, is an activist, media host, and founder of We Are All Human Foundation. She will share her insights on the Hispanic power: the community has so much to celebrate and carries so much pride.

Yet, some members of the community still feel the need to cover their identity. Moreover, with the diversity of the community comes fragmentation. Claudia will discuss the community’s challenges, opportunities, and solutions – as one united Hispanic/Latinx community.

  • September 24:
Our employee resource group, Hispanic Support Organization, is partnering with Hispanics Inspiring Students’ Performances and Achievements (HISPA) on their Role Model Program kick-off and recruiting event.

The evening of September 24 at our Basking Ridge NJ headquarters, we will be hosting an event for 200 HISPA volunteers and supporters including Verizon executives. The HISPA Role Model program is about volunteers sharing their stories and inspiring young Latinos to excel in school and pursue higher education to achieve their dreams.

Throughout the Heritage Month we will have posts and stories on various Verizon social media channels. We will encourage our employees to share their stories and Hispanic Heritage Month experiences with the hashtag #NuestrasVocesUnidas.

Our employee resource groups will have local networking events to continue the celebration and deepen connections among employees across campuses.
