LGBT pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride because of the Stonewall riots in June 1969 and Christopher Street Liberation Day (June 28, 1970). Throughout the month there is a focus on self-affirmation, equality of rights and celebration of sexual diversity and gender variance. Common symbols of pride include the rainbow flag, the lowercase Greek letter lambda, the pink triangle and the black triangle.
To recognize the progress and achievements of the LGBT community, we at Diversity Best Practices asked our members to share what their organizations will be doing this month to celebrate Pride Month.

Johnson Control’s first ever LGBTA Business Resource Group, JC4e (Johnson Controls for Equality) was formed two years ago with two key pillars in mind. (1) Making Johnson Controls an even better place to work and (2) Having an enhanced impact in our community especially from an LGBTA perspective. We have a very engaged group that has produced outstanding results in a short time frame. This includes contributing over 300 hours of community service as well as securing approximately $15,000 from various sources to support our local community.
Pride Fest provides a great opportunity for our Allies to celebrate diversity, network, and make a positive difference in our community. Last year, the JC4e leadership team championed a team event by volunteering at a Beer Pod for the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center and raised the most funds ever in a single four hour shift. This year we are taking a much more active presence and offering an impressive array of volunteer opportunities for our Allies. Two worth mentioning in detail are:

Pacific Gas and Electric Company
PG&E is home to one of the nation’s first corporate LGBT support organization, which is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year. Recently, our executive leaders have been part of the “I’m an Ally” campaign to support LGBT inclusion and safety at work. We are constantly looking for ways to push forward while actively solicit feedback from our employees about all areas of workplace safety, including issues like gender transition.
Working closely with employees who have made and continue to make this transition and advocacy groups such as the National Transgender Law Center, we now have a robust and ever-evolving Transgender policy. Yes, this includes policy about bathroom use, but it is much more. It provides resources for co-workers to understand and support their colleagues during their transition, ways for supervisors to answer questions in respectful and transparent ways, and importantly educational opportunities for those who don’t know what to ask.
PG&E encourages all employees to participate in Pride Parades in San Francisco and other Pride Month events.
