DBP Members Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month 2017

By Jennifer London
September 12, 2017

September 15 – October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

As of 2015,

  • 63.4 percent of people of Hispanic or Latino origin in the United States are of Mexican origin.
  • Another 9.5 percent were Puerto Rican, 3.8 percent Salvadoran, 3.7 percent Cuban, 3.3 percent Dominican and 2.4 percent Guatemalan. The remainder were of some other Central American, South American, or other Hispanic or Latino origin
  • 67 percent of Hispanics or Latinos age 16 and older are in the civilian labor force, and
  • 1.2 million people of Hispanic or Latino descent are veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Many Diversity Best Practices member companies have shared what they are doing to acknowledge and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month this year. Here is what they have in store:

AT&T

AT&T provides their employees platforms to bring their authentic selves to work by sponsoring employee resource groups (ERGs). Founded in 1998, HACEMOS is their Hispanic/Latino ERG. HACEMOS offers a variety of professional development opportunities. Those include EmpoweringLatinas, a platform for all women to come together, network, share best practices, and encourage one another to truly empower one another through a number of events. The most recent event is a series of panel webinars that will conclude during Hispanic Heritage Month. Additionally, the EmpoweringLatinas Inaugural Leadership Summit, Impact, Inspire & Innovate will be held during this time.

In addition to ERG activities, AT&T Diversity & Inclusion is hosting #ATTDiversityTREKs, immersive career and recruiting experiences, to honor and celebrate the month. One example is a collaboration with the National Center for Women in Technology/NCWIT to host 60-80 Latina high school students at AT&T offices in El Segundo as part of their TECHNOLOchicas program.
Also at their El Segundo campus, AT&T is sponsoring events for diverse talent through HACE, HACEMOS, and UCLA/USC to introduce 40 Latina college students to one of our Business 2 Business/B2B College Program.

AT&T will also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by developing a “digital and social-first” influencer campaign that brings cultural heritage to life through compelling stories from influencers, AT&T employees and existing talent.

AT&T’s role is that of the connector – bringing people and cultures together – on their own terms. The campaign’s champions will help us tell these stories. The #ANuestraManera (On Our Terms) campaign will encourage individuals to share stories of when they have done things their way, on their terms and of how technology has enabled them to stay in touch with their Latino roots. Because at AT&T, every voice matters.

Sodexo

Sodexo in Partnership with MALDEF Parent School Partnership : Elevating the Quality of Life for the Hispanic Community

September kicks off the 8th new school year of MALDEF and Sodexo’s Office of Diversity & Inclusion’s team partnering to host the signature Parent School Partnership (PSP) Holistic Health Workshop. Since 2009, the PSP Holistic Health Workshops have focused on educating Latino families on nutritional awareness. To date, these PSP workshops held at Sodexo sites have educated more than 7,000 families on healthy eating behaviors and important lifestyle changes. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month we want to recognize all team members and the community at large, who come together to elevate their quality of life through this program.

“I learned recommendations for cooking healthier and improving my shopping habits. I also learned how to read nutrition labels to help me understand what is in my food. What I loved about the workshop was that it was interactive and the chefs were able to make recipes that I cook everyday healthier. After attending the workshop I have made small changes in my family; we no longer drink soda and have cut back to eating fast food only once a month.” Alma MALDEF Participant

Data suggests that Latino youth are disproportionately plagued by obesity, diabetes, and stress-related disorders and are more likely than their non-Latino peers to develop chronic diabetes. Additionally, this population is more prone to suffer numerous health problems associated with childhood obesity, such as asthma, early onset Type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

MALDEF and Sodexo have found that integrating an educational dietary workshop into parent-engagement programming helps increase understanding of the link between healthy lifestyle changes and combating these health disparities. These workshops feature culturally traditional recipes that have been remixed by Sodexo’s Culinary Chef team incorporating low-sodium, alternative ingredients and substituting healthy ingredients in place of high-fat cooking oils and fried foods.

In its mission to improve the quality of life of the diverse communities we serve, Sodexo will continue to partner with impact-driven organizations such as MALDEF to use education to improve a community’s health and well-being.
