September 15 – October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
We asked our member organizations what they will be doing to acknowledge and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month this year. Here is what they shared.

The communication provides a timeline, historic and socials facts and figures, and the announcement of events planned by the Hispanic Latino Network (HLN) Employee Resource Group (ERG).
One of the HLN events is an annual art show at the Morris County Museum, partnering with community schools to provide students the opportunity to showcase their talent through art. The museum closes for this much-anticipated event where students display artwork that celebrates their Hispanic culture and expresses ideas about their life experiences through diverse socio/cultural/political themes. Last year the theme was What does freedom mean to you? This year’s theme is Leading the way – My generation and how we’ll change the world! The students get to invite teachers, friends and family members to view the artwork and enjoy the catered reception. Novartis’ art curator helps design the show and the HLN chair and other Novartis leaders participate as judges. The contest is a great way to encourage children to create their own personal identity; prizes are awarded to the top artists. The evening is always fun, informative and inspirational.
As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, HLN is also planning a panel discussion titled, “Mental Illness & Associated Stigma.” The panelists will include a prominent group of mental health professionals – a psychologist, social worker and representative from a mental health organization. One in five Americans is impacted by mental health conditions every year, yet many avoid speaking of it or seeking treatment. The panel experts will focus on the challenges in identifying and acknowledging mental illness, because of the associated stigma. They will also explore the added impact of race and age when dealing with mental illness.
Later in the month a “Fun in the Sun” event organized by a partnership of the HLN and AACE (African Ancestry and Cultural Exchange) ERGs will provide a networking opportunity where members can get to know one another while gaining an appreciation of their diverse cultures.

VERIZON
Verizon is excited to celebrate the Hispanic History Month! Our month-long program rallies around one objective: to build up our inclusive culture at Verizon. In this special Month, we specifically call out how we value and leverage our Hispanic employees’ unique perspectives and strengths, and how they have continued to deliver innovation and breakthrough results!
The theme this year – “UNIDOS WE ARE STRONGER!” – was voted by members of our Hispanic Support Organization, one of our employee resource groups.
The month-long program has 3 main anchors:
Showcasing Hispanic leaders (within Verizon and in different industries), calling out their success as walking proof of how diversity and inclusion bring bottom-line business impact.
Having honest discussions around challenges Hispanic individuals face in the business world and how to overcome them.
Uniting Verizon employees of all backgrounds through the contagious energy of the Hispanic culture!
Below are a few examples of the activities we have planned throughout the month:
WELLS FARGO
L’ATTITUDE Conference kicks off leading into HHM – Wells Fargo is the official financial sponsor of L’ATTITUDE, a historic four-day business, media and leadership event that will convene influential Latinos (business leaders, artists, politicians and industry influencers) to discuss and celebrate the economic impact of U.S. Latinos on the New Mainstream Economy. An inaugural event, L’ATTITUDE will take place in San Diego, Calif. Sept. 8 –11, 2018.
Educational Fair to support individuals affected by Hurricane Maria – In partnership with other Central Florida organizations and nonprofits, Wells Fargo will lead an educational fair for individuals who have moved from Puerto Rico to Orlando due to conditions on the island after Hurricane Maria. September 21 marks the one year anniversary of the hurricane. The event will feature sessions about personal financial education, small business, home buying, job searching and more. We’re exploring how to leverage marketing/advertising opportunities for this event with the Marketing Hispanic Segment Strategy Leader.
Wells Fargo partners with Corporate Latin Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) – This partnership taking place statewide (in New Jersey) will support the Hispanics Inspiring Students’ Performance and Achievements (HISPA) 2018 Kickoff and recruitment event ‘With the Endless Power of our Voices’ on September 12. HISPA, Prudential and Hispanic Heritage Network (HHN), the company’s Hispanic-serving Business Resource Group, will host a diverse group of employees to kick off a new academic year of role model programs for New Jersey youth. HISPA, in partnership with Wells Fargo Latin Team Member Network and Latino Networks Coalition, will help more Latino students by getting local professionals into classrooms to introduce college and career opportunities.
Wells Fargo Museum to showcase Hispanic Heritage Cultural Celebration – This festive Hispanic Heritage Celebration will take place in Los Angeles on September 19.
