June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, established to recognize the impact that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals have had on the world.
Originally established as “Gay Pride Day” to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots, Pride has expanded in many places to a month-long celebration including pride parades, picnics, parties, educational events, memorials for those lost to hate crimes and HIV/AIDS, and other group gatherings.
In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as “Gay Pride Day,” but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the “day” soon grew to encompass the month-long series of events.
Below you will find examples of what some Diversity Best Practices member companies are doing to acknowledge and celebrate Pride Month.
AbbVie
Alight
For PRIDE month, among the various local events, Alight is sponsoring a T-Shirt sale to raise funds for the Trevor Project. To date, we have raised$1,653 of our $2,000 goal.
American Institutes of Research
People of color who are LGBTQ+ face a unique set of experiences and challenges that are rarely discussed or well understood. The American Institutes for Research’s (AIR’s) LGBTQ+ ERG, AIR Pride, is excited to celebrate Pride Month with a conversation about race and gender identity/sexual orientation titled, “Not Just Queer: The Intersection of LGBTQ+ and Race.”
Through the conversation, AIR Pride will provide information to facilitate an understanding of the issues and needs of our co-workers, colleagues, and clients who live with the potential bias and discrimination from both identities.
AIR Pride will facilitate an open discussion about race and orientation where attendees can ask questions, make comments, or discuss ways to apply the information to AIR’s research and work.
A panel of three researchers and advocates representing Black, Latino, and Asian LGBTQ+ communities will provide insights, share experiences, and discuss current work that addresses the intersectionality of race and gender identity/sexual orientation.
This event is co-sponsored by three other ERGs at AIR: AIR BLAAC Diaspora Network, AIR VIVA, and AIR Asians in Motion. The event will take place live in AIR’s Washington, DC offices and will be broadcast on GoToWebinar for AIR’s other offices and remote staff.
Bank of America
At Bank of America, our annual celebration of LGBT+ PRIDE Month is robust and broad. It starts with how we cultivate a culture of inclusion that encourages our employees to bring our full selves to work every day.
In addition to the personalized celebration plans that our local market teams have worked hard to develop for their cities, this year, we will be recognizing the LGBT+ community throughout the month of June in a number of ways:
Baxter
The Baxter Equality Network (BEN) was established in 2012 to empower lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight ally employees to be their authentic selves and reach their full potential as professionals.
We now have nearly 600 members worldwide with multiple new chapters established on a yearly basis. BEN chapters hold events throughout the year.
To kick things off for Pride Month and the BRG’s signature month in June, a global contest was held across all Baxter facilities to design a t-shirt to be worn by employees for this year’s Pride events.
Across the U.S. and around the world, multiple Baxter offices will be raising the Pride Flag during the first weeks of the month; our annual “Wear Your Pride to Work Day” will be held mid-June; and employees will be participating in multiple Pride Parades around the world.
Best Buy
Best Buy is doing quite a bit for Pride Month this year, including:
Booz Allen Hamilton
This year, Pride takes on added significance for our LGBTQ employee network, GLOBE, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary at the firm!
In addition to Pride month (June) activities, the firm and GLOBE also recognized and participated in activities for DC Capital Trans Pride and Black Pride week during the month of May.
In June, there are a number of firm- and GLOBE-sponsored activities that employees can engage with:
June 3—LatinX Pride Panel: LGBTQ Immigrant Narratives. GLOBE and our Latin American employee network are partnering with the Center for American Progress, National Center for Transgender Equality, Translatin@ Coalition, Hispanic Federation, and more for a panel discussion on the intersection of LGBTQ, Latinx, and immigrant identities.

C Brands
Our first affinity group was an LGBTQ group in Rochester, started 14 years ago. This year we’ve introduced Stellar Pride which supports employees at all of our locations.
We have the following activities planned:
What’s exciting about these is that it the first time the business, marketing, and our BRG have partnered to engage our employees in these activities. We have employees and key customers walking in all of these parades. Our employees are so excited. For Rochester, this is the first time we’ve participated in the parade, despite being active in the LGBTQ community for a number of years.
Our story is one of progress. This BRG didn’t exist in November, neither did our Women’s Early Career Professionals, or Hispanic/Latinx BRGs. We will end our fiscal year with the kick-off of our African American BRG for black history month. It’s a really fun and exciting time for us.
Capgemini
Capgemini is proud to support WorldPride and participate in the NYC Pride March and Chicago Pride March on June 30 and Grand Rapids Pride Festival on June 15.
Capgemini employees will be joined by clients and business partners in the march that celebrates the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Allies and others) community.
Capgemini strives to provide a forum for education and awareness by supporting the professional growth of the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Allies) community through events, the availability of inclusive benefits and Employee Resource Groups (ERGs).
Capgemini’s ERG, OUTfront, passionately and actively advocates for diversity initiatives within the LGBTQIA+ community. The initiatives are designed to develop an internal culture of LGBTQIA+ inclusion and awareness through educational content in support of an open-minded working environment.
For example, OUTfront conducts internal trainings on LGBT+ topics, and hosts panel discussions about LGBTQIA+ inclusion in consulting and tech. Another important objective of OUTfront is establishing strategic connections with groups such as the National LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce and Lesbians Who Tech to create inroads for LGBTQIA+ community recruitment and inclusion.
Through OUTfront, Capgemini has worked hard to understand and include the needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. We have garnered several accolades over the years including a 2019 ‘Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality’ by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
You can find out more about Capgemini’s World Pride activities and LGBTQIA+ efforts here.

Other Pride Events
L’ORÉAL USA
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is celebrated each year in the month of June to remember the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The Stonewall riots, a series of demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ community against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village in Manhattan, were the tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States.
This year, NYC Pride welcomes World Pride to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and a half-century of LGBTQIA+ liberation.
To honor the month and to celebrate LGBTQ PRIDE, L’Oréal USA and the Out@L’Oréal employee-led Think Tank has planned a robust agenda of events.
The goal is to highlight L’Oréal as a global organization that supports the LGBT community. Throughout the month of June, the following events are planned:
#MARCHFORME Instagram Campaign
On Monday, June 10, Out@L’Oreal is launching a social media campaign called #MarchForMe. Out@L’Oréal will be marching on behalf of employees around the world and the general public who aren’t able to be there in person (for reasons ranging from financial, disabilities, people who aren’t comfortable being out, etc.).
People are invited to submit photos and videos which will be shown on huge screens on the Out@L’Oréal Pride float, thereby bringing others along and allowing them to feel a part of this World Pride movement.
Out L’Oréal will issue an invitation on Instagram, inviting anyone interested to take part in the campaign. By creating access and opportunity for all on a global scale via Instagram submissions, L’Oréal will feature images from employees, influencers & consumers that will be displayed via LED screen on the Out@L’Oréal float in the World Pride Parade in New York City on June 30 and via Instagram.
Submissions will be able to represent their brand, location and individuality. Through this initiative, “86k L’Oréal Employees March for World Pride 2019,” the company will engage people around the world.
During PRIDE Week
Beginning June 24, a series of events will take place in New York:
“Out@L’Oréal is energized and is identifying opportunities to better engage with and bring about change in the LGBTQ community in and outside of L’Oréal USA,” said Xavier Vey, President, L’Oréal LUXE USA and Executive Sponsor of Out@L’Oréal.
“I’m very proud to serve as the Executive Sponsor of OUT@LOREAL and strongly believe that it’s important for L’Oréal USA to support all the different dimensions of diversity, including the LGBTQ community.”
Lord Abbett
Lord, Abbett & Co. LLC, an independent, privately held investment management firm is furthering its commitment to diversity and inclusion—within the organization and beyond—with a series of events that will take place during Pride Month.
Outlining the firm’s activities, James White, Head of Diversity & Inclusion, said, “Our Pride Month celebration at Lord Abbett, which highlights the 50th year anniversary of Stonewall, is a reflection of our values as a company in driving equality for the LGBTQ+ community and all underrepresented communities.”
Lord Abbett’s Pride Month activities kicked off in bold style as the firm illuminated its headquarters on the Jersey City waterfront in the colors of the rainbow pride flag on the night of June 3, 2019. The lights will continue to show Lord Abbett’s support for the LGBTQ+ community every night in June.
In addition, Lord Abbett will host “Straight for Equality in the Workplace” ally training led by Jean-Marie Navetta, Director of Learning & Inclusion for PFLAG National, the nation’s first and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their families, and allies.
Later in June, Brian Bond, Executive Director of PFLAG National, will host a fireside chat at Lord Abbett with Jim Obergefell, the self-described accidental activist who was the plaintiff in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court marriage equality case.
Obergefell will share the story of his role as caregiver for his partner of more than 20 years, who was nearing the end of his life due to ALS. An unexpected series of events led to their decision to marry, eventually taking Obergefell to the Supreme Court and the ground-breaking decision in Obergefell v. Hodges that resulted in victory for marriage equality.
Month of June:
Massmutual
MassMutual is celebrating Pride Month by welcoming LGBTQ activist Amber Hikes to our Springfield, Mass. headquarters on June 20.
Hikes, the executive director of the Mayor’s Office of LGBT Affairs for the City of Philadelphia, is well-known for developing a new version of the rainbow flag that added black and brown stripes.
She will speak at the Pride Business Resource Group’s annual event that is open to all employees. Hikes’ speech will be centered on three concepts: the foundation of the LGBTQ community, intersectionality and allyship.
McDonald’s
For Pride Month in June of 2019, the McDonald’s National and MHQ Pride Employee Business Networks are working together to celebrate our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer employees, customers and communities like never before. We will accomplish our mission in June ’19 by focusing on three pillars: Visibility, Engagement, and Celebration.
1. VISIBILITY
To be even more visible, the MHQ Pride Network will distribute Pride t-shirts, buttons, and stickers at various MHQ communal areas. This type of swag generates awareness for the Pride Network and promotes a culture of inclusivity.
We will be visible everywhere and plan to utilize distribution lists to communicate various Pride updates across Field Offices and MHQ.
2. ENGAGEMENT
The Webcast provided over 100 attendees with updates on business performance, Pride events, Pride Month History, and even featured Executives from the AIDS Foundation of Chicago.
The reception featured special guest Tim Andersen, US VP of Operations and the National PRIDE Executive Chair.
3. CALL TO CELEBRATE
The Chicago Pride Parade is an annual hallmark of Chicago’s summer celebrations. We are excited with the enthusiasm, support and sponsorship of Global People leadership, our MHQ Pride network members, and the hundreds of anticipated McDonald’s attendees and volunteers.
New York Life
New York Life is celebrating Pride Month with several exciting activities and events.
The ERG will also host a reception for Rep. Mark Takano, the first openly gay person of color to be elected to Congress.
Next, NYLPRIDE partners with PFLAG (the nation’s largest family and ally LGBTQ+ organization), broadening the understanding of gender with their “Gender Jargon” event, as well as demonstrating how to be better allies to the LGBTQ+ community.
Another highlight is having Amber Hikes, executive director of the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ+ Affairs for the City of Philadelphia, speak on intersectionality as she challenges and empowers the attendees on how to be better allies.
NYLPRIDE believes in giving back to the community and is having networking fund raising activities throughout the month to benefit The Trevor Project, which is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ young people under 25.
This will be New York Life’s seventh year supporting NYC Pride with a float in the March.
Northern Trust
Northern Trust kicked off the month by updating the name of our North America LGBTA Business Resource Councils to NT PRIDE.
We will be participating in Pride Month via a number of different activities across our two largest offices in North America (Chicago and Tempe).
In both Chicago and Tempe, the Pride flag will be prominently displayed. Chicago’s flag will wave over the streets of Chicago outside of our headquarter building on LaSalle Street all month long.
The Tempe chapter of NT PRIDE is hosting a “Flying the Flag” ceremony on June 3 for all employees to commemorate the occasion in their location.
Our Chicago NT PRIDE chapter is hosting “Creating Cultures of Belonging,” an event featuring Out & Equal Executive Director Erin Uritus.
In alignment with Northern Trust valuing diversity as an essential element of our corporate culture, Erin will discuss the state of LGBTQ workplace equality and offer leadership strategies for fostering inclusion and belonging in the workplace.
We are looking forward to hosting members of Citywide Pride in addition to our own employees for this impactful event which will be followed by networking.
Additionally, Northern Trust’s Chicago office will be participating in the 50th Annual Pride Parade scheduled for June 30.
We have partnered with United Way of Metro Chicago as well as United Pride for the march in the parade. Our participants will wear a baseball hat from Northern Trust and a t-shirt from United Pride. Worth mentioning is that our Tempe NT PRIDE chapter participated in the Tempe Pride Parade this past April.

Our OPEN employee resource group (ERG) hit the ground running, beginning with the Garden State Equality Ball in Asbury Park, where Governor Murphy officially opened Pride Month for NJ, followed by the Pride parade. In Cambridge, Novartis’ Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) also plans to walk in Boston’s Pride parade. Boston Pride’s theme this year is honoring the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn uprising and they are creating a float listing milestone events within the LGBTQ community in the US and globally. NIBR has marched in the parade for the last 5 years and has won awards for best float in previous years.
Other events include a fundraising drive for the Hetrick-Martin Institute in Newark – the first comprehensive LGBTQ youth out-of-school time program in New Jersey dedicated to providing youth who are at-risk of harassment, abuse, neglect, homelessness and disconnection with a safe, supportive environment in which to grow and thrive.
LGBTQ events will continue throughout the year, focusing on creating greater awareness of LGBTQ issues, strengthening our OPEN ERG membership, to create a culture of diversity and inclusion. In addition, specific health issues and concerns within the LGBTQ community will remain a priority with programs planned related to “Coming Out” Day in October.
Novartis US is very proud of our PRIDE events planned for this special month. We work to bring our vision of re-imagining medicine to life through valuing the diversity of people, nurturing an inclusive environment, and shaping positive social change.
Sanofi North America
Sanofi’s North America Inclusion and Diversity team, PRIDE Connect Employee Resource Group, and Parents Connect Employee Resource Group are hosting an inspirational program in honor of PRIDE Month – “The Cool in You: Powerful Stories and Conversation on Gender Identity.”
We are partnering with the GenderCool Project – a national storytelling campaign that is opening up the conversation around gender. On June 20, we will have five diverse transgender young people, GenderCool Champions, on site to share their journeys and insights into their daily lives, passions, successes and future goals. This program will demonstrate how people thrive when they are supported, included, and uplifted.
Sanofi employees are invited to bring their children, middle school age and older, to view this program. This is a way for Sanofi to offer parents an opportunity to support their child’s LGBTQ+ identity and for the students to hear affirming and empowering experiences from peers.
Sodexo

As part of the kick off, PRIDE also launched two LGBT videos that showcased several proud Sodexo allies inviting other employees to join the movement.

As a corporate ally to the LGBTQIA+ community, Unilever remains committed to championing equality, unity, fairness and respect within and beyond its business.
The company launched “United We Stand,” a Pride campaign that turns over the reins of its WorldPride sponsorship to six New York based organizations and six people at the forefront of communicating LGBTQIA+ culture to highlight the issues that merit decisive action.

What’s planned?
As part of Unum’s goal to embrace the power of inclusion and diversity, there will be many events taking place in June to celebrate Pride Month across our U.S. campuses in Baton Rouge, LA; Chattanooga, TN; Portland, ME; Columbia, SC; and Glendale, CA.
These activities and webcast events are also made available to employees at our Field Offices and for home workers across the country.
Live viewing sessions and an online webcast are available for all company employees in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Field Offices and home workers.
This second installment is a wonderful opportunity for employees to hear the impactful and eye-opening experiences and stories of their colleagues. Last year, the panel event received positive feedback from Unum’s senior leaders and executives as an eye-opening and inspiring event.
Why is this important to Unum?
Making sure everyone feels safe and comfortable coming to work and bringing their best selves is a top priority for Unum. We believe that embracing everyone’s diversity, back grounds and identities creates an environment that can thrive and provide greater service as a company.
Pride Month is just one of many important movements that Unum supports and embraces. Recently, Unum became a sponsor of Equality Maine and GLAD (GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders), and the company secured a perfect score on the HRC Corporate Equality Index for being one of the most inclusive places to work.
