November is host to both National Native American Heritage Month and Veterans Day in the United States. Below we offer some of the basics about each and highlight what our member organizations are doing to acknowledge both.
In 1990, President George H.W. Bush designated November “National American Indian Heritage Month.” It is also referred to as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage month. The month gives the general public the opportunity to learn more about the diverse cultures, traditions and histories of Native people. American Indians and Alaska Natives make up about 2 percent of the total population.
The states with the highest populations are Alaska, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota and Montana (in descending order).
The Library of Congress website has a multitude of resources to help educate your organization’s community about Native people in the US.
In addition, Diversity Best Practices members can access our Native American Heritage Month Resource Hub.
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. Armistice Day was first celebrated in 1919 in honor of those who had served in World War I. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day to honor all American veterans, wherever and whenever they had served.
In its 99th year, the Department of Veterans Affairs is broadening that tradition of observance and appreciation to include both Veterans and Military Families for the entire month of November.
For more information and resources, members can visit our Veterans Day Resource Hub.
We asked our member organizations what they will be doing to acknowledge and celebrate National Native American Heritage Month and Veterans Day this year. Here is what they shared:
AbbVie
Aramark
Here are a few things we’re doing at Aramark, specifically led by Aramark Salute (our Veteran’s ERG), to honor Veteran’s Day:
Booz Allen Hamilton
As a part of our Unstoppable employee movement, we’re asking each Booz Allen office to pause to recognize our military-affiliated employees during November with a breakfast (or similar style event).
Building upon the overwhelmingly positive response to our 2018 military appreciation efforts, we’ll again be distributing military lapel pins to recognize our employees who have newly identified in Workday as being a veteran, military spouse, and/or member of the National Guard or Reserves.
All employees are encouraged to attend—each event will be promoted to employees locally.
CSAA Insurance Group
Last year, our Oklahoma City Regional Center launched the company’s first Native American employee resource group, the Native American Employee Association (NAEA), in an effort to create an inclusive and culturally-based program that promotes the American Indian tribes of the United States and local communities.
For Native American Heritage month this year they will host a Native Art and information display in the building lobby. The company intranet site featured an informational video recognizing Native Americans and their great influence on the history, culture and growth of our country and introduced the passionate co-leads of our first Native American employee resource group.
Here are the activities planned by our Military Appreciation Groups (MAG):
Colorado Springs
Annual backpack drive for homeless vets. MAG Colorado provides backpacks with necessity items, i.e. gloves, socks, tooth brush/paste, etc. to homeless vets as well as items for their pets.
Glendale
Participating in the Phoenix Veteran’s parade.
Hamilton
Hamilton will have various military gear on display and allow teams to try on. We will have Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) for those brave enough to eat. There will be a POW display table and a dedicated day where we are asking employees to wear red shirts.
Las Vegas
Participating in the downtown parade & hosting a lunch for veteran employees.
Mt. Laurel
MTL is planning a display of Meals Ready to Eat (MREs), facts about how they are used and rationed, and a potential raffle for 3 of the MREs if anyone is interested and willing to try them J. There will be a display along with military gear/uniforms. We are also coordinating with a local veterans facility to donate leftover candy from Halloween to the veterans from November 1st – November 11th.
Oklahoma City
Coordinating with the local AAA club to walk in the Veteran’s Day parade in Midwest City.
Walnut Creek
From 11-14 Nov, Walnut Creek will have a Veteran’s Wall in the lobby where employees can post pictures of veterans (themselves, a family member, or a friend) along with added sentiments and notes. A POW/MIA table will be on display as well as the 13 Folds of the Flag.
Estee Lauder Companies
Veteran’s ERG planned activations/events for Veteran’s Day and month of November include:
This Veterans Day we are excited to announce a new initiative called Red, White & Blue Notes. As a retired member of the military and the man who came up with the Company’s prized “Blue Notes,” Mr. Leonard Lauder will be sponsoring this initiative to support active military members deployed overseas.
U.S.-based ELC employees will have the opportunity to write letters to active military members that will be collected and sent out in time for the holidays and we are looking for volunteers to help!
Red, White & Blue Ambassadors:
Volunteers are needed to be location ambassadors to help set up posters, note cards and collection boxes in all common spaces (kitchen, reception, etc.) in participating offices.
Each ambassador will be responsible for receiving the collateral items, setting them up and then collecting and sending them back to the GM offices once the initiative is complete. We will then work with the USO to have them shipped to active military members overseas!
Red, White & Blue Notes Video Feature:
There is also a video component to this campaign, in partnership with Mr. Leonard Lauder, thanking ELC employees who are veterans and their families, while also introducing the Red, White and Blue Notes initiative, encouraging employees to take a moment and write a letter to an active military member.
We are looking to feature 3-5 ELC employees who are veterans to share their story, why they love working for ELC, and why receiving letters while on active duty is important. The video will be featured on our internal and external channels (MyELC, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.).
Fifth Third Bank
Fifth Third Bank values its active duty military and veteran employees and the service they have provided to our country. During the month of November, the Bank and its employees will honor these servicemen and women in a variety of ways.
In Greater Cincinnati, the military business resource group will present an exhibit that honors veterans. The program will include the presentation of colors, the National Anthem and a keynote speech by theBank’s chairman and CEO.
The Fifth Third Bank Museum staff will also kick off a veterans’ history project to document the military service of Bank employees, both past and present that includes first-hand accounts of their service experiences. In Central Ohio a group of 25 military business resource group members and Bank employees did home repairs and improvements for a Navy veteran in Columbus. Every year the group partners with Rebuilding Together to identify a homeowner who is a veteran who needs help with improvements, repairs, and general upkeep in their home.
Members of the Bank’s Greater Indiana military business resource group reached out to customers and employees who self-identified as veterans and completed a veteran’s build project. The project, which was completed in the Spring, benefitted HVAF of Indiana, an organization supporting homeless veterans and their families in need.
Members of the resource group along with some of the Bank’s regional senior leaders joined clients and community partners at the Folds of Honor Patriot Black Tie Gala, which supports education assistance to Gold Star families.
The West Michigan military business resource group once again hosted the West Michigan Military Roundtable, a group that collects military memorabilia, at one of the Bank’s campuses in Grand Rapids. This year the group brought in military memorabilia and vehicles from WWII, specifically the invasion of Normandy, which had its 75 th anniversary this year.
Bank employees and the public are invited to tour the ‘museum’ that the Military Roundtable sets up on campus. The business resource group members

PayPal
PayPal observes the entire month of November as Veterans Recognition month, and will be celebrating with many activities to highlight their contributions to our company and our communities.
After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium becoming enriched with lime from the rubble left by the war. From the dirt and mud grew a beautiful red poppy. The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.”
The red poppy is a recognized symbol of sacrifice worn to honor those who served and died in all wars. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. 100% of the proceeds of the Poppy sales across PayPal will go toward supporting the welfare of veterans, active military personnel, and their families where financial and medical need is evident.
